Wales is a small but proud country with its own distinctive culture and language, which is still used today. This is evident as soon as you cross the welsh border and read the multilingual road and tourist signs dotted around the wonderful scenery. For such a small country, Wales has so much to offer, from the breathtaking Snowdonia National Park to Cardiff, the exciting capital ; Wales has a wealth of attractions to keep you happy for days.
Start from the north coast of Wales in Llandudno, a picturesque seaside resort reminiscent of the Victorian period and full of character. After browsing the many shops and cafes, make your way to the delightful Great Orme Tramway and take a ride to the Great Orme summit. Once there, as well as the amazing views, you will find a visitors' centre, tourist shop, café and licensed hotel to keep you entertained for hours.
Not far away is Conwy, a lovely little town which has the smallest house in Britain - the Quay House. This fascinating structure measures just 10 x 6ft and only costs £1.00 for adults and 50p for children for a peek inside.
Castles, Forts and a National Park
Further down towards the north-east of Wales is the beautiful walled town of Caernarfon with its majestic castle and ancient monuments. Visit the ruins of a Roman fort, or better still, book a guided tour around this stunning place to get the most out of your experience. Still in the north- east, take a trip by coach to Llangollen, a charming town with quaint tearooms and little shops to buy unique or unusual gifts.
A twenty minute coach drive from Caernarfon will take you to the vast Snowdonia National Park. With its stunning mountain scenery and impressive post glacial features, this wonderful place will take your breath away. Take the Snowdon Mountain Railway to the top of Mount Snowdon and enjoy the views from Wales's highest mountain. You will also find the National Slate Museum in this area which is well worth a visit to find out the history behind the imposing slate mountains that surround it.
Capital Culture
Cardiff is one exciting city to visit and has come a long way since the regeneration of its waterfront. Cardiff Bay boasts an abundance of attractions and activities, including the striking Millennium Centre where you can enjoy anything from opera to modern circus acts. Stroll along Mermaid Quay and enjoy the many bars and restaurants. In the heart of Cardiff you will also find trendy bars and eateries, as well as superior boutiques and distinctive architecture to admire.
Not too far away by coach is Penarth, an extraordinary place at the south end of Cardiff Bay. This outstanding town has a newly restored Pier Pavilion reflecting the Art Deco architecture which is prevalent in other restored buildings along the waterfront. It has a cinema, art gallery, cafe, bar and restaurant, and even fishing is permitted for free at the end of the pier except for summer months. Not only that, but also free musical entertainment is provided along Penarth's seafront during the summer – it is Wales after all.
